Increasing Students' Motivation with Guided Learning in Primary Mathematics Lessons (CANCELLED)

21st Century Classroom

Overview

Our school uses the ‘guided teaching method’ to teach ‘Speed’. After sixth-grade students understand the basic concept of speed, the school uses the toy car to conduct related exploration activities, including:
1. Understanding the ‘reaction time’ and its influencing factors by comparing the differences in the timing results of the students;
2. Using the tablet video editing function to improve the accuracy of the timing results;
3. Using the P0, P1, and P2 pins of the Micro:bit to review electrical conductors and ‘Closed circuit’; and
4. Using the ‘running time’ of Micro:bit to make a speedometer, and finally using Micro:bit to display the average speed of the toy car moving on the speedometer.

During the learning process:
1. Students will find the insufficiency of manual timing, so they can learn to use the video editing function of tablet computers for timing purpose;
2. Students will use the principle of the closed circuit to make Micro:bit timer: start timing when P0 pin is pressed, stop timing when P1 pin is pressed; and
3. Finally, students will use ‘Speed = Distance ÷ Time’ to calculate the speed of the toy car during programming, and display it through LED lights.
