Utilising the Metaverse for Learner-centred Constructivist Education in the Post-pandemic Era

Main Stage Presentations

Overview

This presentation will argue that educational discussions related to metaverse need to be considered from a more learner-centred perspective.

Before and during the pandemic era, various studies related to the combination of metaverse and education were conducted. However, most of these studies focused on the application of technologies rather than the provision of learner-centred environment, and neglected the efforts to understand these technologies from students’ point of view rather than a technical one. In addition, it can be considered as a problem from a constructivist perspective that these researches were conducted in an artificially created environment, which specifically served for a research purpose, rather than a real-life environment of students.

When working with students, it is more important to understand what technology they are using and how it affects their growth and relationships, instead of only focus on how new the technology is, or how much time the students have spent on it.
Therefore, based on these issues, the presentation will discuss how students can be related to the metaverse in natural real life. The speaker will examine how students have actually experienced the metaverse, whether they still use it, and what their attitudes towards each factor of metaverse, and aims to propose some conclusions from these discussions. Last but not least, the speaker will argue that in order to understand the perspective of a student, educators must also understand the world in which the students live, and also what their interests are.
