Ways to Promote Young Children’s Socioemotional Development

Overview

In order to facilitate the development of young children’s routine, socioemotional, and learning skills during the fifth wave of the pandemic, the Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) of EdUHK, with an additional funding from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, launched the EdUHK Jockey Club School Transition and Readiness Extended Support Project in March 2022. The Project extends the scope of service to families of primary two (P2) school children. The Project involves free distribution of the EdUHK Jockey Club STARt-up Resource Kit to all P2 families and online workshops entitled ‘STARt-up Student’ Growth Group.

The Project’s ‘STARt-up Student’ Growth Group online workshop is proven effective in encouraging student’s active learning and attending to their socioemotional development through an interactive approach. The speaker will introduce the design of the workshop and demonstrate how early childhood educators can promote young children’s socioemotional development through a series of activities, for example, executive function games, mindfulness exercises, storytelling, and rehearsing social scenarios.
