Forum: ‘A Lesson for the 21st Century – Cultivating Digital Literacy’

Main Stage Presentations

Overview

The Learning Compass 2030, introduced by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), pointed out that as one of the social and emotional foundations, digital literacy is a prerequisite for further learning across the entire curriculum. International comparisons released by Centre for Information Technology in Education of The University of Hong Kong in 2022 showed that the overall digital literacy of students have greatly improved from 2019 to 2021; however, digital competence divide has also greatly grown. Simply improving digital devices access cannot solve the widening problem of the digital literacy gap. It will negatively impact on many students’ academic learning and further exacerbate the overall learning divide among students.

In this forum, the academics and experienced educators will share their insights on cultivating students’ digital literacy, and discuss the challenges of promoting digital literacy schools encounter nowadays. Must the effectiveness of learning and teaching be enhanced if information and communication technologies are used in lessons? How can schools design curriculum that narrows the digital literacy gap among students? How can teachers equip themselves to become digital citizens before getting into classrooms?
