Teaching Strategy for Conservation — A Case Study in Shark Conservation

K12 Theatre

Overview

In Hong Kong, the development of environmental education is inclined to teach ecological knowledge rather than discussing the topics about wild animals in the affective and ethical approaches. On the environmental education, educators may be limited by factors such as geographical limitation and teaching resources, hindering the students in gaining first-hand connection with wildlife and fostering caring attitudes towards animals. Using shark conservation as the context, the research team compared how different educational strategies, cognitive – ecological based approach, affective – moralistic based approach, and dual attitudes -based approach, affected senior primary school pupils’ attitudes towards sharks and behavioural intention for shark conservation. The speakers will share the preliminary results of the research study with a view to providing evidence-based strategy in the education and conservation for wildlife.
