Build up on Lesson Study: School Based OWN Learning Plan (Mathematics)

K12 Theatre

Overview

The mathematics panel of this school has been conducting Lesson Study since 2011. In addition to optimising teachers' teaching and experiencing how to conduct lesson study, it also enhances the exchanges of teaching ideas among teachers.

Since 2015, the Mathematics panel had developed a school-based OWN learning plan which was based on the experience in lesson study. The learning plan included three aspects:
'O': Open book (Let students experience self-directed learning with flipped classroom element)
'W': Work it out (Let students try to deal with related topics after self-study, and make a preliminary self-assessment)
'N': Note to self (Let teachers collect students' 'Work it out', analyses students’ learning difficulties, and designs the lesson based on Variation Theory. Students work in groups and give feedback to each other. Teacher, as a facilitator, guides the students to think and master the learning from the presentation of the groups. Finally, student will jot down their own notes.

'OWN', as the name implies, hopes that students will construct their own learning, which is active participation, not passive learning.
